At Dusk on a Summer's Eve - the Song
Some time ago I wrote a poem entitled, "At Dusk on a Summer's Eve." I liked the poem and I thought it should be set to music. However, the tune that I chose did not have the same meter as the poem. So, I rewrote the poem and set it to an old American Folk Tune called "Lady Mary."

A Hidden Garden
|
At Dusk on a Summer's Eve
To the tune of Lady Mary, an American Folk Song
Alone in this garden fair,
My thoughts like a fabric I weave.
My mind drifts on with the wind,
A prayer from my spirit to breathe.
The cricket chorus now swells;
The heat of the evening recedes.
The warbling birds are now still
At dusk on a summer's eve.
Perfume from the roses so sweet;
Wet dew on their petals and leaves.
The odor of dark, musty soil
Lying still on the soft evening breeze.
The trees frame a darkening sky
With the stars on the tips of their leaves
And fireflies twinkling below
At dusk on a summer's eve.
The night stirs a gentle breeze.
Refreshment my body receives.
The stillness of night casts its spell
Mysterious dreams I perceive.
The evening chimes send their call,
It is time for this fellow to leave.
A lovely hymn ends my day
At dusk on a summer's eve.
A lovely hymn ends my day
At dusk on a summer's eve.
